SXSW Takeover

If you see nothing else in Austin check out the famous Graffiti Park, as it is an amazing sight. Here, artists from around the world have the opportunity to tag their art on walls upon walls. Local artists get to paint a picture that reflects what the heart of the city means to them. If you’re lucky, you can even catch them in the act and witness their masterpiece coming to life. Whether you’re a prominent graffiti artist or just a visitor you have the chance to tag or just sign the walls and leave your mark for millions to see.

It’s almost a crime to venture to Austin and not get a taste of the local cuisine: TACOS! We were lucky enough to stumble upon the hidden treasure that is Tacodeli. They pretty much have any and every taco combination you could imagine; from veggie options to a meat lovers dream. And if it’s not on the menu they make it just for you, however you’d like. Along with the fresh ingredients used to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, they also make their own award-winning sauce, which is to die for! Just enough flavor and just enough kick, in true Austin style.

If you’re looking for a good ol’ burger joint I highly recommend Old School Bar & Grill! The Zilker Park burger has a guacamole topping that will melt in your mouth, and the beef was prepared medium-well to perfection. If you’re looking for a vegetarian friendly option, the Black Bean burger is just as fantastic and comes with a sweet and tangy blend of avocado and spicy chipotle sauce. Old school is known for their brews and the drink menu is nonexistent so the wine-o in us all may have to convert to a beer for the time being. But it’s totally worth it!

As you know, music is a huge part of the SXSW experience. There are tons of events and parties happening every day and night to showcase talent, whether it’s from a newbie or your favorite existing artist. According to Kehlani was the “coolest girl” to take over this years SXSW. She performed at venues such as the Youtube House, Austin Music Hall and Emo’s. Other acts to catch were Jay Electronica, French Montana and Travis Scott.

 The Onion

The Onion is a hustle and bustle pizzeria located within walking distance from 6th street. It’s a perfect solution to satisfy that drunken, late night (they’re open til 3am) craving for greasy junk food! It’s crowded and small but the wait is minimal and their signature sauce definitely gives your pizza a kick at the end of every bite.

University of Texas Blanton Museum

From a 1990s exhibition to ancient wine-making artifacts from Greece, this museum had much variety to offer. Unlike most museums we were allowed to take plenty of photographs of most of the artwork. Be sure to park in the garage on Brazos for a $4 flat rate for your visit. And if you’re a student (anywhere, not just at UT) show a valid student ID for half off entry!

Magnolia Cafe

This ideal brunch spot is intimate and southern with a mimosa that’s loaded with equal parts charm and champagne! The portion sizes remind us that everything is uniquely bigger and better in TEXAS. With a friendly wait staff and a parkside view packed with greenery, Magnolia Cafe feels as if it’s your grandma’s home cooking and you’ll never want to leave.

Believe the hype, people. The sunset view from Oasis is like nothing you’ve ever seen. Make sure to get there roughly an hour before sunset to secure a seat for your viewing and photoshoot pleasure. Take in the lakeside breeze then be sure to catch some live music and a fresh brew from the Brewery.

 Peached Tortilla

What started as a small food truck has now become the Asian-infused southern cuisine restaurant that is now the Peached Tortilla. With freshly made preserves and flavored butter they take a simple bread plate to a whole new level. The crab pad thai is a top rated entree and for good reason.

Highland bar was quite the experience. We happened to wander in on a Thursday night and were just in time for the drag show. It was here where we encountered the friendliest, most fierce faces. Immediately following the show was hip hop hour, playing the genres latest hits with a rage twist! The strobe lights and smoky dance floor made for a fun night!
